In Summary... |

-
Spyware continues to plague us all. Use Ad-ware SE
to help you manage this beast (www.ad-aware.com). If you
are running an older revision (Rev 6), make a point of
reinstalling to get the latest SE edition. Microsoft has
introduced a beta version of its new product - Microsoft
Windows AnitSpyware. Try it out at
www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/.
-
Interested in a Windows alternative on the desktop? If
you using a desktop for Web Access, some Word processing,
etc – look into using Linux on the desktop with Xandros.
Check it out at www.xandros.com . Wal-Mart at
www.walmart.com sells a low-priced PC with Xandros for
$200-$300.
-
Support for Windows 95 is gone. Windows 98
support is nearly gone and causes constant problems. Be
careful not to spend time or money on Window 95, 98 or
Windows ME issues.
-
Get connected to your Microsoft
Exchange Email system remotely using Outlook Web Access. OWA
is easy to use and very functional – and it allows you
to get your Email from any connection to the Internet.
-
SPAM
is a bigger problem then ever. User SPAM tools that are
server-based work in conjunction to Microsoft Exchange
Server to help stop the SPAM E-mail to your users. Mail
Essentials from GFI is a product that we and many of you
already use.
-
Getting access remotely to your system via VPN is now “standard issue”. If you are not using VPN now,
maybe it is time to consider doing so.
-
Consider using Mozilla’s FireFox Internet Browser instead of Internet
Explorer. FireFox has some features that you may enjoy. Many
view it a safer browser as well. You can use if free of
charge by downloading it at
www.getfirefox.com.
-
VOIP
(Voice over IP) is catching on as a replacement for your
standard telephone service – even for use in the home. Using
the Internet to place and receive phone calls is gaining
popularity. While on the business side you would want to get
your phone vendor part of the conversation, there are home
services available like Vonage (www.vonage.com) that are all
"customer installable."
-
Many businesses have security
systems in place with Video Recorders as part of the
solution. Your business system can “interact” with the
security system using GENLOCK to publish system information
as foreground information on the video.
-
You may have
heard in the media that Wal-Mart is moving in the direction
of using RFID. Radio Frequency Identification is a method of
remotely storing and retrieving data using devices called
RFID tags. An RFID tag is a small object, such as an
adhesive sticker, that can be attached to or incorporated
into a product. RFID tags contain antennas to enable them to
receive and respond to radio-frequency queries from an RFID
transceiver. Many in the industry feel that this is the
future of product tracking.

Interacting with Forms: MailClone/Omniform |
There are many times in the business environment where it would be great to interact with associates, customers and sales reps via forms sent by Email. With this in mind, we have created a new offering called MailClone/ Omniform. Through this technology, the business system can directly E-mail out a semi-populated form to an intended recipient. The recipient, in turn, can update additional information on the form as needed by the application. When the recipient elects to do so, he or she can Email the form back to the business system. The business system will “auto-receive” this form automatically and populate the business system databases as required without any user intervention.
Uses of MailClone/ Omniform include:
- Sharing information with Sales Reps. Sales Reps could manage Credit Apps, manage survey information, and update contact information, etc.
- Sharing information with Service Personnel. Service folks could update equipment on site, contract information, etc.
- Sharing information with any associate out in the field, away from the confines of your office building.

While many of our customers are using the Windows interface to their applications, many others have not made this change. Maybe it is time to consider the change?

CDS Profile:
Catalina Express |
|
|
|
We at CDS welcome aboard Catalina Express as a new
customer, a Southern California business located in
Los Angeles. Catalina Express is all about
“shuttling” passengers back and forth between the
mainland and Catalina Island using their fleet of
watercraft.
Our relationship with Catalina is all about their
internal system used to manage ticketing and
reservations; everything needed to manage the Boat
Reservation business. We are working with Catalina
to help them retool their application to run in a
Linux environment. In the near future, they would
like to consider additional functionality that many
of our customers have been using effectively for a
long time - Auto Emails to customers and internal
recipients, PDF support, interactive form support,
Jetform and the auto delivery of reports.
You can learn more about Catalina Express at
www.catalinaexpress.com. |

We welcome you to the February, 2005 edition of Copeland Data News.
We are very excited about 2005 here at CDS, and look forward with great optimism to the future ahead..
Everyone is oversaturated by the media these days, whether it is on the printed page, through E-mail
or through video. With that in mind, we are giving our readers a condensed and “trimmer”
CDS News in this edition. Your time is valuable and you can now review the topics quickly.
If something pops up in your head as you read like “We should be doing that!” please contact
us so we can better identify your need and bring out solutions.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact us.
