Consider downloading and installing CDS Desktop, a
tool written by CDS to help you manage your IT
needs. This application can run on your desktop at
machine startup and can be minimized easily into
the
System Tray. While you can continue to use CDS
Online to manage your projects, you may find CDS
Desktop to be a great addition to your desktop.

You can find this tool on the
downloads page of our website.
If you need a username and password, just drop us a
note. Please give CDS Desktop a try.

As the storm season is approaching, it may be a good time to
test your UPS battery backup units. Go through a
trial run (off hours), unplugging the units to monitor how long they
will run. Take notice of the audible signal and educate
others in the office of this signal. At the same time
it would be a good idea to pay attention to your backup execution.

As
cell phones continue to evolve, some of these models called
"smartphones" are becoming more affordable. A
smartphone will typically have Internet access and email
support on the phone. While the operating system (OS)
of the phone may vary, most of the smartphones available
today run Windows Mobile for Smartphones, Palm or the
Blackberry Operating System. Buyer beware - just
because the phone is running a Windows OS does not mean it
will run all Windows applications. You will need to
investigate what runs on each of these OS platforms as it
relates to the hardware mobile device. Your need will help
dictate what type of smartphone may work best. The
latest smartphones can support Microsoft’s Direct Push
technology, which actually pushes messages to your phone
from an Exchange Server. If you want to know more
about this technology or anything else about smartphones,
just let us know.

Verizon
Wireless customers – EVDO is finally here in Buffalo.
EVDO is a wireless broadband standard that delivers
broadband Internet access to your phone or PC. While
this service has been available in the Rochester area, it
just recently made its way to WNY. EVDO is the same
network that delivers VCAST – Verizon’s streaming
technology. Wireless broadband access is good stuff,
but it can be pricey.

Web
Services can be used in many ways. For many of you, the use of
web services can bring information
from your business system closer to your customers.
Using SOA (Service Oriented Architecture) and CONNX (an ODBC
connector), an XML-based web service can be set up to
exchange information between you and your partner or
customer. The application mentioned above, CDS
Desktop, is built on this framework. You may want to
consider using web services to exchange information with
your customers and partners.
|
 |
We
at CDS have been working at building interfaces and tools so
that we can be more effective with our customers. You
may want to consider applying some of these technologies to
your systems for your customers. Imagine the
possibilities!

We
are seeing more and more Bluetooth device support
than ever before. Bluetooth is a radio frequency-based
technology that allows for wireless communications between
supported devices, typically over a short distance (30 feet
or less). You may see Bluetooth headsets for cell
phones, or Bluetooth-supported printers and laser projection
keyboards communicating with a PC. Bluetooth is in
many cases replacing the "short wires" that connect up our
gadgets with our devices. If you buy a new PC, you may
want to consider including Bluetooth adapters to support
these devices today and in the future. |

Managing your IT Needs
For most our customers, we "are" or "are an extension
of" their IT Department. That being said, it is
important that we are available, accessible and ready to
handle your needs and requirements, as small or as vast
as that request may be. While we may be physically
located either down the road, across town, across the
state or the other side of the continent, with the use
of technology we can operate like we are seated at the
desk right next to you.
It is for this reason that we have developed CDS
Online, CDS Online for Mobile Devices, and
CDS Desktop. We want to make it easy and seamless
for you to interact with us, share new information with
us, and keep track of those issues that still need some
attention. If you have not already done so, we urge you
to try these tools.
Many of our customers are using CDS Online, available
at
www.copelanddata.com/customers.

If you need a username and password – just drop us a
request at
cdsonline@copelanddata.com.
Once you are in the system, you will see the
following:

From here, you can manage various aspects of your
projects, as well as share information with us to start
a new project.
 |
|
Additionally, added as a new extension to CDS
Online, you can also choose to setup a
personalized logon, which is available at
the Administer User Accounts menu option (see
screenshot on left).

You
can also manage Auto Reports, dictating who
will get a Project Status Report every
Monday afternoon (see screenshot above). |
You may want to add new personalized accounts of
others in your organization so they will be on the "Auto
Reports" list. If you need an initial login and
password to get you into the system, please let us know
and we will get you this information.
 |
|
As
reported a few months back, we also have CDS Online for
Mobile Devices. From your mobile device, simply go to
www.copelanddata.com. |
| |
|
|
|
Finally, as reported earlier in this newsletter, we
have also created CDS Desktop, which is an application
that you download from our
customer downloads page
and install right on your desktop. While you can
uninstall the application at anytime, you may find
CDS Desktop easy to use, always up-to-date and out of
the way when you are working on something else.
Please
give it a try!
|
In summary, we at CDS are here to help you meet your
goals. These new tools will help us all in managing many
aspects of IT and allow us all to communicate more
easily in doing so.
Please take a few moments to review
CDS Online, CDS Online for Mobile Devices and
CDS
Desktop. |
